How Roof Trusses are made

roof trusses

This post is about the process from beginning to end to manufacture timber roof trusses.

Step 1 – Design

Before the manufacture process can start the roof trusses must be designed. This can be done in many different ways using different types of software applications.

Step 2 – Timber and Nail Plate Picking

Once the factory receives the job card or cutting bill the timber and nail plates will be picked and taken to the next work station. The nail plates will go directly to the manufacture station and the timber will go to the saws. The saw operators will then cut the top chords, bottom chords and webs according to the job cards received.

Step 3 – Manufacture

Once the timber has been cut it will be taken to the manufacture station. The personal working at this station is often called “Jig Setters” and/or “Truss Assemblers”. It is their responsibility to assemble the trusses in accordance with the job card. This process is quite critical, because if the job card is not followed closely the risk of the roof trusses collapsing on site is very high. That is also why it is important to have a responsible person at such a work station to inspect the trusses as they are manufactured to check for flaws or faults in the trusses.
